Shades of Gray

Khrushchev had promised that he would destroy us from within.

The torch was passed to our generation and we, being impatient, tossed caution to the wind. We used lighter fluid to ignite the necessary changes, instead of letting the flames’ grasp come upon the coals gradually.  When the winds finished shifting, we had burned our principles and values nearly down to the ground.

Only a microphone was necessary to exert influence; add the internet, which has helped spread an infestation of untruths, many posing as urban lore or, worse yet, history, and Voila!  Now, with a bit of theatrical bravado and narcissism, anyone can invade the public intellect and mesmerize the masses in high definition.

Why are any of us who are old enough to remember his words still in disbelief?
